Water is 880 times more dense than air.
That fact, combined with my inability to swim more than 2 lengths without swallowing a lung's volume of water, helped me decide to prioritise swim training.
I had a stroke (excuse the pun) of good fortune in happening across a DVD: "Total Immersion: Freestyle Made Easy". If, like me, you're as uncoordinated as the proverbial drunk on the dance floor then get your eyes stroking over this over this. It concentrates on balance and stream-lining through the water. After around 10-12 sessions of doing the drills I almost have a stroke I'd be happy to perform in front of others...almost. The lack of air thing is still tough, but I'm getting there...slowly. Well, actually, not that slowly - maintaining form whilst going slow seems tougher than at speed, oddly.
Now, whilst my running goes well, and swimming progressing well I'd better find some time to go cycling. I just hope not to discover that cycling is 1600 times more exhausting than swimminng.

Hi Bob,
Congratulations on a good result in your first tri.
Just out of interest have you considered joing a tri club, especially for your swimming needs? Leeds & Bradford Triathlon club has several swim sessions a week aimed at different abilities all with British Triathlon qualified coaches.
I'm a member of LBT and I can honestly say that regular attendance to thier coached sessions has made a big difference
Hi Ed,
Thanks for the comment, though my first tri is tomorrow - I think you've looked at my rategt times.
I'm still trying to decide if and when to join LBT, I don't have a wetsuit so thought there'd be little point until next summer when I hopefully will and will be ready to try outdoor swimming?
Hi Bob,
Even if you don't have a wetsuit by attending some of the swim sessions you will be in a better condition for open water swimming next season. Some the pool based sessions have drills specifically aimed at improving your open water swimming. For example, last wed, in the main part of the session all starts had to be deep water starts i.e. we were not allowed to push off the wall.
Well done on your most recent tri
